MOV vs MP4: What's the Difference, and Which Should You Use?
Updated November 5, 2026
MOV and MP4 are nearly the same thing: both are containers that hold video and audio. Picture quality depends on the codec inside, not on the file extension. For sharing, MP4 with H.264 video is the safest choice, because almost everything can play it.
Containers and codecs
Think of a container as the box and the codec as what's packed inside. MOV is Apple's box, and MP4 is a standard one based on it. Inside either you might find H.264 or HEVC video.
That's why renaming a file from .mov to .mp4 sometimes works and sometimes doesn't: the name changes, but the video inside doesn't.
Why iPhone videos fail to play
iPhones usually record in HEVC, which keeps files small. Many Windows PCs, older TVs and some apps can't decode it without extra software. The problem is the codec, so converting to MP4 with H.264 fixes it.
When to convert
Convert when someone else has to play the file, or when an upload form refuses it.
- 1Sharing with people on Windows or Android: convert to MP4.
- 2Uploading to a form that lists MP4 only: convert to MP4.
- 3Editing in Final Cut or iMovie on a Mac: keep the MOV.
- 4Keeping the original as an archive: keep the MOV, and convert a copy.
