Character Counter
Paste a post, bio, title or message to count its characters and see at a glance whether it fits the limits of X, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn, Google search results and text messages. Everything is counted in your browser.
How to count characters
- 1Type or paste your text into the box.
- 2Read the character count, with and without spaces, below the box.
- 3Check the “Does it fit?” list to see how many characters you have left for each platform.
Characters as people see them
An emoji, a flag or an accented letter counts as one character, even when it's stored as several codes behind the scenes. That matches how most apps show their limits. Bytes (UTF-8) shows the storage size, which matters for databases and some APIs.
Platform limits
The list covers the limits people hit most: 280 for an X post, 150 for an Instagram bio, 2,200 for an Instagram caption, 100 for a YouTube title, 3,000 for a LinkedIn post, about 155 for a Google search description, and 160 for one text message.
Special cases
X counts every link as 23 characters and some characters, such as Chinese or emoji, as two. A text message holds 160 plain Latin characters, but only 70 once it contains an emoji or a non-Latin letter. Google trims descriptions by pixel width, so 155 is a guide.
Frequently asked questions
- Does it count spaces?
- The main count includes spaces. “Without spaces” leaves out spaces, tabs and line breaks.
- Is my text sent anywhere?
- No. The counting happens in your browser and nothing is uploaded or saved.
- Why does my phone show a different count?
- Some apps count the hidden codes inside emoji and flags separately. This counter counts what you see, which is what most social apps use for their limits.
