How to Open and Convert HEIC Photos on Windows

Updated November 5, 2026

HEIC is the photo format iPhones use by default. It saves space, but Windows may not open it without an extra codec, and many websites refuse it. Converting to JPG fixes both problems.

Why HEIC causes trouble

HEIC keeps similar quality to JPG in a smaller file, which is why Apple uses it. The trade-off is that it isn't as widely supported, especially on older Windows PCs and on government and job application forms.

How to convert

Converting in the browser means your photos don't have to be uploaded.

  1. 1Open a HEIC to JPG converter.
  2. 2Add your photos.
  3. 3Download the JPGs.

Stop it happening on your iPhone

On an iPhone, Settings > Camera > Formats > Most Compatible makes the camera save JPG. Your photos will take more space, so converting only when you need to is often the better choice.
