How to Remove the Background from an Image

Updated November 5, 2026

To remove a background, run the image through an AI cutout tool, check the edges, then save it as a PNG with transparency or put the subject on a new background. Clear, well-lit photos give the cleanest edges.

Photos that cut out well

AI cutouts work best when the subject stands apart from the background. Good light and a sharp subject help most. Fine hair, glass, and a subject in the same color as the background are the hardest cases.

Transparent or white?

The right output depends on where the image is going.

  1. 1Design work, logos and overlays: transparent PNG.
  2. 2Online shops: a plain white background, which many marketplaces expect.
  3. 3Profile photos: a solid color or a soft blur of the original.

Keep JPG in mind

JPG has no transparency, so a transparent image saved as JPG gets a solid background. If you need transparency, keep it as PNG or WebP.
