.gitignore Generator
Keep dependencies, build output, editor files and secrets out of your repository. Tick what your project uses and get a single, tidy .gitignore to drop into it.
How to create a .gitignore
- 1Tick the languages, frameworks, editors and systems your project uses.
- 2Check the combined file.
- 3Download it as .gitignore into your project's root folder, or copy it.
Templates
Node.js, Python, Java, Go, Rust, C and C++, .NET, Ruby, PHP, Next.js, Vite, Django, Rails, Laravel, Flutter, Android, iOS and Xcode, Unity and Terraform, plus VS Code, JetBrains, Vim, macOS, Windows, Linux, .env files and logs.
No duplicates
Templates share many lines, like build/ and dist/. Each line appears once, under the first template that needs it.
Keep secrets out
The secrets template ignores .env files but keeps .env.example, so you can share the settings a project needs without the values.
Frequently asked questions
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. Everything runs in your browser.
- I added a file to .gitignore but Git still tracks it. Why?
- Ignoring only affects untracked files. Run git rm --cached <file> once, then commit.
- Should I ignore lock files?
- No. package-lock.json, poetry.lock, Cargo.lock for apps and similar files should be committed, so they're not in these templates.
