How to write a number in words
- 1Type the number, with or without commas.
- 2Choose the Indian or international system, and the currency.
- 3Copy the plain words, the amount or the cheque-style text.
Indian and international systems
In the Indian system, 12,34,567 is “twelve lakh thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”: a lakh is 1,00,000 and a crore is 1,00,00,000. In the international system, the same number is “one million two hundred thirty-four thousand five hundred sixty-seven”.
Cheque style
Indian cheques are written in title case with “Rupees” first and “Only” at the end, such as “Rupees One Lakh Twenty-Five Thousand and Fifty Paise Only”. US cheques write cents as a fraction: “One thousand two hundred thirty-four and 50/100 dollars”.
Decimals
As plain words, decimals are read digit by digit: 12.05 is “twelve point zero five”. As an amount, they become paise, cents or pence, rounded to two places.
