ULID Generator
ULIDs are unique IDs that sort in the order they were made, which keeps database indexes tidy and makes IDs easy to scan. Generate as many as you need and see when each was created.
How to generate ULIDs
- 1Choose how many you need.
- 2Click “Generate new ULIDs”.
- 3Copy one, copy all, or download them as a text file.
How a ULID is built
The first 10 characters are the creation time in milliseconds and the last 16 are 80 random bits, written in Crockford's Base32, which leaves out I, L, O and U so IDs can't be misread.
Sorting
IDs made later sort later, even as plain text. IDs made in the same millisecond count up from each other, so they keep their order too.
ULID or UUID?
Both are 128 bits. ULIDs are shorter as text (26 characters instead of 36) and sort by time; UUID v7 sorts by time too, in the standard UUID format.
Frequently asked questions
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. Everything is computed in your browser and nothing leaves your device.
- Can I get the time back from a ULID?
- Yes, from its first 10 characters. Each generated ULID shows its creation time.
- Are ULIDs case-sensitive?
- No. They're uppercase by convention, and lowercase ones mean the same.
