Find and Replace Text

Swap one word for another across a whole document, delete a phrase everywhere, or reformat text with a regular expression. The result updates as you type, with a count of replacements.

How to find and replace text

  1. 1Paste or type your text, or open a text file.
  2. 2Type what to find and what to replace it with.
  3. 3Turn on Match case, Whole words or Regular expression if you need them, then copy the result.

Whole words

With “Whole words only” on, replacing “art” changes “art” but not “start” or “article”. It works with any alphabet, not just English letters.

Regular expressions

Turn on “Regular expression” to match patterns, such as every number or every email address. Use $1, $2 or $<name> in the replacement to reuse captured groups, $& for the whole match, \n for a line break and \t for a tab.

Safe with tricky patterns

The replace runs in the background, separately from the page. If a pattern would take too long, it's stopped after a few seconds instead of freezing your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Is my text uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, and nothing is sent or stored.
How do I delete a word everywhere?
Type it in “Find” and leave “Replace with” empty.
Which regular expression flavor is it?
JavaScript's. Most patterns from other languages work as they are; lookbehind and named groups are supported.
