Remove Silence from Audio

Cut the dead air out of a recording. Every pause longer than the length you choose is shortened, so lectures, voice notes and podcast drafts get tighter without sounding chopped.

How to remove silence from audio

  1. 1Click “Choose audio file” or drag a file onto the page.
  2. 2Choose what counts as silence and how long a pause has to be before it's shortened.
  3. 3Set how much of each pause to keep, so speech still breathes.
  4. 4Click “Remove silence” and download the file. The result shows how much was cut.

Which setting should I use?

“Quiet (default)” works for most voice recordings. If background hum or room noise keeps pauses from being detected, try “Quiet and soft”. If quiet words are being cut, try “Very quiet only”.

Why keep part of each pause?

Removing pauses completely makes speech run together. Keeping 0.1–0.3 seconds sounds natural. Set it to 0 for sound effects or samples where you want no gaps at all.

Silence at the start and end

Silence before the first sound and after the last one is trimmed down to half of the kept length, so the file starts and ends promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?
Yes, with no signup.
Is my recording uploaded?
No. The pauses are found and cut in your browser.
Does it work with videos?
It reads the sound from a video and gives you an audio file. Cutting the video picture along with the sound isn't supported yet.
Can I remove background noise too?
Yes: run the noise remover first, then this tool. Cleaner pauses are detected more reliably.
