Online Tone Generator
Generate a steady tone at any frequency. Tune an instrument to A4, test speakers and headphones, check your hearing range or make a test signal, then save it as a file if you need one.
How to generate a tone
- 1Drag the frequency slider, type a frequency, or pick a preset such as A4 (440 Hz).
- 2Choose a waveform and a volume, then click “Play”. Changes apply while it plays.
- 3To save it, choose a file length and format and click “Create file”, then download.
Waveforms
Sine is a pure, smooth tone with a single frequency. Square and sawtooth are buzzy and rich in overtones. Triangle sits in between. Use sine for testing and tuning.
Protect your hearing and speakers
Start at a low volume. Very high frequencies can be hard to hear but still loud, and very low ones can push small speakers too far. Laptop and phone speakers can't reproduce much below 100 Hz.
Frequently asked questions
- Is it free?
- Yes, with no signup.
- Why can't I hear very high tones?
- Most adults can't hear above 15–17 kHz, and the limit drops with age. Many speakers also stop well before 20 kHz.
- Can I download the tone?
- Yes, as WAV or MP3, from 1 to 60 seconds long.
- Is the frequency exact?
- The tone is generated digitally at the frequency you set. What you hear also depends on your device, which plays it at its own sample rate.
