JSON Validator

Find out at once whether a piece of JSON is valid, and if it isn't, exactly where it breaks. Valid JSON comes back neatly formatted with a summary of what it holds; invalid JSON points at the offending character.

How to validate JSON

  1. 1Paste your JSON or open a .json file.
  2. 2Read the result: “Valid JSON” with a summary, or an error with the line and column.
  3. 3Fix the error, or copy the formatted JSON.

The usual suspects

Most invalid JSON comes down to a trailing comma after the last item, single quotes instead of double quotes, keys without quotes, a missing comma between items, or comments, which standard JSON doesn't allow.

Exact error locations

The error message names the line and column, shows that line, and puts a caret under the character where reading stopped. The real mistake is usually right there or just before it.

Checked as you type

The result updates while you edit, so you can fix errors one by one and watch the message change.

Frequently asked questions

Is my data uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so the JSON never leaves your device.
Does it follow the JSON standard exactly?
Yes. It uses your browser's built-in JSON parser, which follows the JSON standard (RFC 8259).
Can it fix the JSON for me?
No. It shows you where the problem is, so you stay in control of what changes.
What about JSON with comments?
Comments aren't part of standard JSON, so they're reported as errors. Remove them before validating.
