Text to Binary Converter
See how a computer stores your text, as eight 0s and 1s per byte, or decode a string of binary back into words.
How to convert text to binary
- 1Type or paste your text.
- 2Choose what goes between the bytes.
- 3Copy the binary, or click Swap to decode it back.
How it works
Each character is turned into bytes with UTF-8, and each byte is written as eight binary digits. The letter A is 01000001; letters beyond plain English take two to four bytes, so é is 11000011 10101001.
Decoding
Binary can be pasted with spaces, commas or line breaks between bytes, or as one long run of digits that's split into groups of eight.

Frequently asked questions
- Is my data uploaded?
- No. The conversion runs in your browser and nothing is sent anywhere.
- What is “Hello” in binary?
- 01001000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111.
- Why does my binary decode to an error?
- A digit is missing or extra somewhere, so the bytes don't line up. Each byte needs exactly eight digits.
