HTTP Status Codes

Find out what a status code means, and what to do about it. Search by number, by name or by a word like “redirect” or “rate limit”, or browse the codes by class.

How to look up a status code

  1. 1Type a code, a class like 5xx, or a word.
  2. 2Read the name and explanation.
  3. 3Clear the search to browse every code.

The five classes

1xx codes are informational, 2xx mean success, 3xx are redirects, 4xx mean the request had a problem and 5xx mean the server failed. The first digit tells you where to look.

Codes that get mixed up

401 means you're not authenticated and 403 that you're not allowed; 301 and 308 are permanent redirects while 302 and 307 are temporary, and 307 and 308 keep the request method.

Unofficial codes

A few non-standard codes you'll meet in practice, like nginx's 499 and Cloudflare's 52x errors, are included and marked as unofficial.

Frequently asked questions

Is anything sent to a server?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
Which code should my API return for invalid input?
400 for malformed requests, and 422 when the request is well formed but its data fails validation.
Is 418 a real status code?
It's from an April Fools' RFC about coffee pots, kept as a joke; some servers use it for fun.
