MIME Type Lookup
Set the right Content-Type header, configure a web server or check an upload filter. Type an extension or a MIME type and get the match from a list of more than 2,500 types.
How to find a MIME type
- 1Type a file extension, like webp or .json, or part of a MIME type.
- 2Read the matching types and their extensions.
- 3Copy the type you need.
Where the list comes from
The data is mime-db, the list used by Node.js servers like Express. It combines the official IANA registry with types from Apache, nginx and common practice; registered types are marked.
Extension or type
Anything without a slash is read as a file extension and matches types that use it; anything with a slash searches the types themselves, so image/ lists every image type.
Compression hints
Types worth gzip or Brotli compression, like text, JSON and SVG, are marked compressible.
Frequently asked questions
- Is anything sent to a server?
- No. Everything runs in your browser.
- What's the MIME type for an unknown file?
- application/octet-stream, which tells browsers to download the file rather than open it.
- Why does one extension have several types?
- Some formats were registered more than once, often an old x- type and a newer official one. Prefer the registered type.
